How to stop your Ford Ranger being stolen

The Ranger is on every syndicate’s list, and the method used against yours depends on how it starts. A push-button Ranger is taken differently to one with a blade key. Here is each method, who it applies to, and what actually stops it.

The short answer. A factory immobiliser cannot stop a modern Ranger theft, because both common methods end with a key the factory system accepts as genuine. What stops the vehicle moving is a second, independent authentication the thief cannot obtain — a PIN, an encrypted fob, or your phone. carGuardian is that layer: the engine will not crank without it, whatever key is presented.

Which Ford Ranger models does this cover?

Our fitment list covers these Ranger generations, by Ford’s own program codes: Ranger [T5] (2012–2015), Ranger III facelift [T6] (2015–2019, blade key), Ranger and Everest [T6] (2015–2021), Ranger Raptor (2017–2018), and the next-generation Ranger IV [P703] (2022–2026, push-button start). The Ford Everest shares the platform and the electronics, and is on the same list. Older Rangers and variants not named here may still be covered. The full list runs to more than 1,500 variants, so check yours below.

Read straight from our fitment database. “Protection available” is what the unit can do on that generation. It is not identical across every variant, so we confirm your exact Ford Ranger before fitting.

How a Ford Ranger actually gets taken — and what stops each method

Not every method applies to every model, which is why generic advice is close to useless. Find yours in the middle column.

Theft methodWhich models are exposedWhat carGuardian does
Relay attackPush-button models — principally the next-generation P703 (2022–2026). Your key stays indoors; the signal is amplified from outside. The relayed signal opens the doors and satisfies the factory immobiliser. The engine still will not crank: carGuardian wants a PIN, fob or phone that no amount of signal amplification can produce.
OBD key programmingEvery Ranger, including blade-key models. A programming tool plugs into the diagnostic port and writes a brand-new key to factory specification. The new key is genuine as far as Ford is concerned. It is irrelevant to carGuardian — a key the factory accepts still does not start the engine.
Drive-away hijackThe vehicle is taken while running, with the legitimate key in the cabin.Where the function is available, the engine cuts between roughly 300 m and 1 km from the scene, at low speed. The distance is set at fitment. It is not available on every Ranger variant, and we tell you before you pay if yours is one of them.
Flatbed or towAll Rangers.carGuardian does not prevent a vehicle being removed on a flatbed truck or towed away. A tracker inside will notify you and help find the vehicle.

Can a Ford Ranger be stolen without the key?

Yes. Two methods do it routinely in South Africa. A relay attack amplifies the signal from a key sitting inside your house to the vehicle outside, which unlocks and starts it. That affects models with push-button start, principally the next-generation Ranger. OBD key programming works on every Ranger regardless of how it starts: a tool plugged into the diagnostic port writes a brand-new key that the factory immobiliser accepts as genuine.

Which Ford Rangers are most at risk?

Models with push-button start carry relay-attack exposure that blade-key models do not, because there is a signal to amplify. But an older blade-key Ranger is not safer overall: OBD key programming works on every Ranger, and needs only brief access to the cabin.

Does a tracker stop my Ranger being stolen?

No. A tracker reports where the vehicle went after it was taken. It is a recovery tool, not a prevention tool, and vehicles are frequently stripped before they are found. Prevention and recovery are different jobs, and most owners run both.

Will fitting carGuardian void my Ford warranty?

No. The unit is fitted non-destructively — no wires are cut — and installation takes two to four hours.

Does carGuardian work on an older Ranger?

Yes. Generations from 2012 onward are on the fitment list. Older blade-key models benefit most from the OBD-programming protection, since that is the method used against them.

What you get on every vehicle on this page

The engine will not start. Every Ford Ranger generation listed above supports it, and it is the protection that matters most. Both common theft methods end with a working key — and on this vehicle a working key is not enough. Some generations support more; the table says which.

Where your tracker takes over

Towing and recovery belong to your tracker: a vehicle on a flatbed never needs to start, and finding it afterwards is what a tracker is built for. Run both layers and each covers what the other cannot.

Is my exact Ford Ranger on the fitment list?

Every Ford Ranger generation named above is on the list, alongside more than 1,500 other variants across 128 makes. Check your exact year and variant. We confirm compatibility, and which protections it supports, within 24 hours.

Other high-risk models

The same methods are used against the Toyota Hilux and the VW Polo. Everest, Fortuner, Corolla Cross, Hyundai Grand i10, Nissan NP200 and Isuzu D-Max are all on the fitment list.
